Today I would like to tell you about an idea to sell your actual physical books. You are probably trying to get your book listed in the usual places, such as high street book stores as well as independent book shops, maybe also in the book section of supermarkets. That’s all good and you will want to keep doing that, but have you thought that your options might be much wider than that?
How about selling your books in places where people don’t normally buy books? Sounds counter intuitive? Well, think about it. You’re going to a hairdresser’s or barber’s and have some time to wait. What do you do? Not everyone thinks about bringing a book. You could look through their magazines, definitely a popular option. But what if there was a small display of an interesting looking book, would you buy it? Or how about a coffee shop or a tearoom? Or maybe the little corner shop where you pop in to buy milk? Or what about a petrol station?
Any of these places normally don’t sell books, but if you speak to the owner and offer them a commission they might not want to miss out on a bit of extra income. Don’t overdo it and sell your book in every possible outlet in your town, but dotted around 2 or 3 places in your town and a few neighbouring towns, wherever is easy for you to get to in order to restock might be a good idea to get your book to more people. This way you’ll not only catch the usual “bookshop crowd” but also people who will buy a book on a whim, just because it’s there and they maybe looking for something to read for themselves or for a last minute present for a loved one.
Now over to you, where can you think of that might sell books for you – and only you!
